Cabrillo Crushers Take State Championship
The 14-and-under Cabrillo Crushers softball team got a slow start at the California State Championship in San Diego, but prevailed to win the double-elimination tournament. The Crushers lost their first game July 9 to Atascadero 3-1 and went into the losers' bracket. However, as proud parent Joe Grant noted, "These 13 girls would not be denied."

They won four straight games on Saturday, playing until 11 p.m., only to get up Sunday morning and play two more early games. They again faced Atascadero in the semi-finals, winning 11-1 to reach the finals.

There the opponent was number-one seed Carmel, which had won against the Crushers three weeks earlier and which they would have to defeat twice to win the title. The Crushers took the first game 3-1.

"The championship game was one for the ages," said Grant.

Cabrillo was down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, but tied the score to send it to extra innings. In the eighth inning, Carmel took a three-run lead, but the Crushers managed to tie it up again.

Then with the bases loaded a walk ended the game and brought the state championship to Santa Cruz County.

"It is the first state championship that anyone can remember from this county," said Grant.

Congratulations to players Danielle Grant, Katrina Agosti, Jamie Corder, Jadeane Martin, Jade Rogers, Michaela Barnett, Tori Roberts, Abigail Lacki, Savannah Horton, Crystal Smeland, Hannah Bossard, Makenna Provancha and Sami Bishop, and their coaches Ken Provancha, Jim Corder and Shauna Horton.
