Libraries' First Capital Campaign
On the heels of a Grand Jury report emphasizing a need for new technology in Santa Cruz County's 10-branch library system, the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries has launched a $1 million fund raising effort.

The libraries need a new integrated library system as well as computers for patrons. It also hopes to increase the number of self-checkout machines and eventually add self-return devices.

The cost of a new ILS system is estimated at $200,000. That is the computer system that drives the purchase, cataloging and processing of books and materials as well as management of patron accounts.

Although the board has budgeted some money toward new technology, the Friends organization has taken on that area its first capital fundraising effort. If the drive is successful, it will free up money within the budget for other uses, confirmed library director Teresa Landers.

Friends member donations and proceeds from book sales have gone toward programs and purchases as requested in the past, including recently some of the first self-checkout machines.

The downturn in local tax revenue resulted in a second year of significant cuts to the system. Last year those included reducing the open hours. The same schedule remains in place for the 2010-2011 fiscal year that began July 1, including Friday furloughs negotiated with employees. This year's reductions came from some staff reductions and cuts to the materials budget, but not service hours.
