Scotts Valley Picks Library Contractor
Plans to convert a former skating rink to Scotts Valley's new library branch continue to move ahead with the acceptance of a $2.6 million bid to complete the structure makeover on July 7.

DL Falk Construction of Hayward was the lowest of five bidders. Based on recommendations from its project management team, the city divided the project in the base remodel and several other optional features to be added if possible within the budget. They are included in the proposal.

Those include a teen platform, a bamboo hedge to help manage energy costs, end panels and tops for the stacks, skylights and a parking lot slurry coat.

"There have been real advantages to moving forward with this project in this economy," said Mayor Jim Reed.

In addition, the Scotts Valley Friends of the Library has offered to pay for a book wall and fireplace at $15,300.

Santa Cruz County will pay about $38,000 to retrofit the parking lot as a demonstration model for diverting storm water into a groundwater recharge system rather than storm sewers.

Other "green" features of the facility include environmentally friendly furnishings and carpets, maximized natural light and a shower for employees to encourage biking or walking to work.

Although the library portion of the building will be nearly three times the size of the current Scotts Valley branch, it is being designed to operate with the same staffing levels.

The city plans a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. on Aug. 14, timed to coincide with the annual city's Art & Wine Festival.
