Pajaro Valley Teachers, District Agree to Shorter School Year
The 19,000 students from Aptos to north Monterey County that attend the schools of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District will have five fewer days of school for the next two years if the agreement announced Mar. 2 is ratified by the district board and teachers' union.

The agreement resulted from months of contract mediation. In exchange for the loss of five paid days, the union was granted its long-time request for binding arbitration. That means that should the district and union have a disagreement they cannot settle, they will abide by the decision of a neutral party.

Both sides also plan to work together to manage health care insurance costs.
The agreements must be approved by votes of the school board and union membership.
