Refusing Payment
A taxi driver who brought a South Lake Tahoe resident all the way to Santa Cruz County said he was stiffed the $1,379.50 fare, even though he continued transporting the woman after she failed to get money at a bank in the Sacramento area. According to Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Campos, the passenger first asked the driver to take her to Meyers, near Stockton, but then changed her mind and asked to go to Santa Cruz. The cabbie said he had taken people to Sacramento or the Bay Area, so he did not find the request unusual, said Campos.
When the fare reached about $700 near Sacramento, Jennifer A. Bigelow, age 22, asked how much more it would cost and asked to stop at a bank, Campos reported. The driver told law enforcement that she did not get money, but they continued on anyway. When they arrived in Soquel, she refused to pay and the driver called the sheriff.
