South County High Schools Get $25,000 Sports Grant
Student athletes in Pajaro Valley Unified School District's four high schools will share in a two-year, $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.

The grant was awarded in late December and announced to the school board in January.

"We are thrilled. The Cultural Council was very generous," said Cathy Stefanki, the assistant superintendent who oversees the high schools.

Student athletes were asked for the first time to contribute $150 this year to play after-school sports when deep budget cuts reduced district funding for those programs.

The fee is not mandatory, and many students have struggled to afford it, especially in schools with large numbers of families trying to make ends meet. This grant will help to cover costs from uniforms and balls to transportation, said Stefanki.

It will not go toward personnel, she added. Some coaches are providing their services for free and others are getting reduced stipends. The grants may free up some district money to help with those expenses, she said.

The money will be divided over two school years and shared among all four high schools: Aptos, Renaissance, Watsonville and Pajaro.

The district will distribute the money using a formula that incorporates the number of students playing sports and the number who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program at each school, Stefanki said.
